Handbook of Texas Online: Ranger, Tx Community history and information.
RANGER, TEXAS
Ranger, on Interstate Highway 20 between Abilene and Fort Worth in northeastern Eastland County, derived its name from the Texas Rangers, qv who in the 1870s had a camp in a valley about two miles northeast of Ranger on a prong of Palo Pinto Creek
By 1879 the beautiful valley housed a tent city with tent churches, schools, hotel, and general store, and was known as Ranger Camp Valley
The inhabitants of Ranger Camp Valley moved to the railway and established the permanent town of Ranger
Davis was appointed postmaster of the new Ranger post office
Between 1889 and 1904 Ranger grew from a town of 350 with two doctors to 750 with five doctors, a bank, a high school, and a women's literary club
As an agricultural center, Ranger was hit hard by the drought of 1917
1 came in, reached a daily production of 1, 700 barrels, and began a mammoth oil boom that drastically changed Ranger and Eastland County
The discovery of oil in Ranger led the oil industry to reappraise Texas as an oil-producing area and allayed fears of a nationwide oil shortage, which had been growing since 1900

TEXAS RANGERS
Austin qv hired ten experienced frontiersmen as "rangers" for a punitive expedition against a band of Indians
qv But not until November 24, 1835, did Texas lawmakers institute a specific force known as the Texas Rangers
At all times they had to be ready to ride, equipped "with a good and sufficient horse...[and] with one hundred rounds of powder and ball." Even with such official sanctions, the rangers did not fare especially well at first
As settlers fled east to escape advancing Mexican armies after the fall of the Alamo on March 6, 1836, the rangers retrieved cattle, convoyed refugees across muddy trails and swollen streams, and destroyed produce or equipment left behind
Lamar qv succeeded to the presidency and immediately changed the frontier policies of the republic as well as the role of the rangers
At his behest, Congress allowed him to recruit eight companies of mounted volunteers and maintain a company of fifty-six rangers, then a month later to provide for five similar companies in Central and South Texas
Over the next three years the rangers waged all-out war against the Indians, successfully participating in numerous pitched battles

One of the early groups to answer that call was Terry's Texas Rangers
They had been heralded in New Orleans, and all along their route, as "The Texas Rangers." Technically, they may not have been "Texas Rangers, " but this point seems to have been lost to people east of the Mississippi
During the war, they were refered to by a variety of names, including: "the 1st Texas Ranger Regiment"; "Wharton's Regiment"; "Harrison's Regiment"; "Cook's Regiment", "Wharton's Rangers"; "The Rangers"; and even simply as "the Texans." Terry's Rangers first charged into battle near Woodsonville, Kentucky, on December 17, 1861
Wharton was eventually promoted to General, as was Thomas Harrison, the man who followed him in commanding the Rangers

Popkorn Junkie: Texas Rangers
Review of the film by 'Billy Ray.'
Movie review for the film Texas Rangers starring James Van der Beek, Randy Travis, Rachael Leigh Cook, and Dyla n McDermott
| Junkie Rating: Cast and Credits Steve Miner (Director) Dylan McDermott (Leander McNelly) James Van Der Beek (Lincoln Rogers Dunnison) Ashton Kutcher (George Durham) Robert Patrick (Ranger) Randy Travis (Ranger) Usher Raymond (Ranger) Rachael Leigh Cook (Caroline Dukes) Alfred Molina (John King Fisher) Like the movie? Maybe you'll like..
Move over Emilio Estevez, here comes...Dylan McDermott??? Yes, that's right, Dylan McDermott plays Leander McNelly, the leader of the Texas Rangers, a group of young folks who protect women and fight bad guys
Those weren't critical successes, and "Texas Rangers" will not be either, but I enjoyed it because I guess I was in the mood for a good Western action movie with a lot of shooting and zero plot
Go rent "Unforgiven" or "Tombstone"--grow an affection for the Western--and then rent "Texas Rangers" when it comes out on video
"Texas Rangers" is not a good technical movie, but I found it to be a good popcorn movie
